Even if green tea can be considered as an alternative to coffee, I would not recommend switching to it completely, because of some of the health benefits that coffee has.
So most of the people who are reading this will already know that caffeine boosts your metabolic rate, and causes you to burn more energy. Green tea contains caffeine, and for this reason it will achieve similar results. Never drink decaffeinated green tea or coffee, because the chemicals that are used to remove caffeine from both of these products are not good for you. There is very little research on them, and even based on that they don’t look really safe. I would recommend to drink organic coffee, since they use a lot of pesticides on regular coffee and green tea to keep it growing.
Caffeine works in multiple ways and one of the most common is the stimulation of the sympathic nervous pathways. This means that it activates your adrenals in to producing hormones which help your body be more focused and active. The most important hormone is cortisol, which is very useful if you are trying to work or do a workout, but if you are trying to sleep or relax, it should be cut down to a minimum. Excessive cortisol will make you fat, as it is going to start eating your muscles, and turning the amino acids in them to glucose. This glucose will then be stored in your adipose tissue, and at the same time your resting metabolism will go down due to the decrease in your lean body mass, which will make you gain fat faster. Cortisol in the morning is great, in the evening not. So drink your green tea in the morning, not after 4 pm.
Another reason why caffeine in green tea boosts weight loss, is the improvements in insulin sensitivity that it causes. It has been shown to make you more insulin sensitive for a short time after drinking it.
